London

London is the capital of Great Britain, its political, economic and cultural centre. It began its life as a Roman fortification on the river Thames. Today it is one of the largest cities in the world and the biggest seaport in Europe. The population of London is more than 9 million people.

The gradual growth of the city helps to explain the fact that London does not have just one centre, it has a number of centres, each with a distinct character: the financial and business centre called the City, the shopping and entertainment centre in the West End, the government centre in Westminster and the industrial centre in the East End.

The City is the smallest part of London. Here you can find the Bank of England.

The West End includes Trafalgar Square, the main shopping areas of Oxford street, one of the busiest in the West End, Regent Street and Bond Street, and the entertainment centres of Soho and Picadilly Circus.

Westminster is a part of London that has long been connected with royalty and government. Westminster or the Palace of Westminster stands for the Houses of Parliament. Number ten Downing Street is the home of the Prime Minister. The most important building but not the most beautiful is Buckingham Palace which is the official residence of the Queen.
